Mézam

Mézam is a department in the North-West Region of Cameroon. Its administrative headquarters is the city of Bamenda. The department is situated in the Grassfields area of the country. It is bordered by the departments of Boyo to the north, Bui to the northeast, Mbawé to the east, Ngoketunjia to the southeast, and Mezam to the southwest. Mézam covers an area of approximately 1,792 square kilometers.

The population of Mézam is diverse, with several ethnic groups inhabiting the region. The main ethnic groups include the Tikar, the Bamileke, and the Kom. The economy of Mézam is largely based on agriculture, with crops such as maize, beans, yams, and plantains being cultivated. Livestock farming, including cattle, sheep, and goats, is also prevalent. Trade and small-scale industries contribute to the local economy.

Bamenda, the capital of Mézam and the North-West Region, is a significant urban center and a hub for commerce, education, and administration. The city is known for its vibrant markets and its role as a gateway to other parts of the region. Mézam is characterized by its hilly and mountainous terrain, with a tropical climate that supports lush vegetation. The region experiences distinct wet and dry seasons.

The cultural landscape of Mézam is rich, influenced by the traditions of its various ethnic communities. Traditional ceremonies, music, and dance play important roles in the social life of the people. The department faces challenges common to many rural and developing areas, including infrastructure development and access to resources. Despite these, Mézam remains a vital part of Cameroon's North-West Region.
