Georges Méliès (1861–1938) was a French illusionist and filmmaker regarded as one of the most important pioneers of cinema. Born in Paris, he began his career as a stage magician before turning to moving pictures. He founded the Star Film Company and produced a prolific output of short films from the mid-1890s through the early 1910s, developing a distinctive style that blended theatrical staging with early cinema.
