Méhnyálkahártyát is the Hungarian term for the endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus. This delicate tissue plays a crucial role in the female reproductive cycle. Each month, in preparation for a potential pregnancy, the endometrium thickens and becomes rich in blood vessels. This proliferation is stimulated by hormones, primarily estrogen and progesterone. If fertilization and implantation occur, the endometrium provides the environment for the developing embryo.

If pregnancy does not occur, the hormonal support for the endometrium wanes, leading to its breakdown. This shedding of the uterine lining is what constitutes menstruation, also known as a period. The menstrual cycle is a complex interplay of hormonal signals and tissue changes, with the endometrium being a central player.

The health of the endometrium is vital for fertility and a successful pregnancy. Conditions affecting the endometrium, such as endometriosis or endometrial polyps, can impact reproductive health and may require medical attention.
