Märehtiviä refers to a group of herbivorous mammals belonging to the suborder Ruminantia. These animals are characterized by their unique digestive system, which allows them to ferment plant material in a specialized stomach before digestion. This process is known as rumination, or chewing the cud, and it involves regurgitating partially digested food and chewing it again. This adaptation is crucial for breaking down tough cellulose found in grasses and other plants, enabling ruminants to extract nutrients effectively.

The Ruminantia suborder is a diverse group that includes a wide range of species. Common examples found worldwide are cattle, sheep, goats, deer, giraffes, and antelopes.
