Mágnescsíkokat

Mágnescsíkokat, or magnetic stripes, are a common data storage medium used on credit cards, gift cards, and other identification cards. These stripes are composed of small magnetic particles embedded in a plastic or adhesive strip. The data is stored on these particles by magnetizing them in specific directions, similar to how data is recorded on cassette tapes.

The magnetic stripe typically contains three tracks. Track 1 is usually reserved for account information, including the cardholder's name and account number. Track 2 holds the account number and expiration date, and is the most commonly read track by point-of-sale terminals. Track 3 is less commonly used but can store additional information such as country codes or currency codes.

When a card with a magnetic stripe is swiped through a magnetic stripe reader, the reader detects the magnetic patterns on the stripe and decodes them into usable data. This process allows for quick and efficient transactions, as the cardholder's information can be accessed without manual input.

While magnetic stripes are widely used, they are also susceptible to damage and data theft. Magnetic fields can erase the data, and the stripes can be physically worn down over time. Furthermore, "skimming" devices can be used to illegally copy the data from magnetic stripes. Due to these vulnerabilities, many newer cards are incorporating chip technology, such as EMV chips, which offer enhanced security features. However, magnetic stripes remain prevalent due to their low cost and established infrastructure.
