Mylapore

Mylapore is a neighborhood in Chennai, India, located in the southern part of the city. It is one of the oldest and most culturally significant areas of Chennai, with a history stretching back over two millennia. The name "Mylapore" is believed to be derived from "Mayil" meaning peacock in Tamil, and "Puram" meaning town, possibly referring to the ancient legends associated with the area.

The Kapaleeshwarar Temple, a prominent Shiva temple, is a major landmark in Mylapore. It is renowned for its Dravidian architecture and is a popular pilgrimage site. The San Thome Basilica, built over the tomb of Saint Thomas the Apostle, is another significant religious site and a testament to the area's diverse religious heritage. Mylapore is also known for its vibrant cultural scene, with numerous sabhas (cultural organizations) that promote Carnatic music and classical dance, especially during the annual Margazhi music festival.

The neighborhood retains much of its traditional charm with narrow streets, old houses, and bustling bazaars. It is a hub for traditional Tamil arts, crafts, and cuisine. Mylapore is a densely populated residential area and a commercial center, offering a blend of historical significance and modern urban life. The area is well-connected to other parts of Chennai by public transport.
