Myeloperoxidase is an enzyme primarily found in neutrophils, a type of white blood cell. It is abundant in the azurophilic granules of these cells and plays a crucial role in the innate immune system. Myeloperoxidase catalyzes the reaction of hydrogen peroxide with chloride ions to produce hypochlorous acid, a potent oxidizing agent. This hypochlorous acid is a key component of the antimicrobial arsenal of neutrophils, used to kill ingested bacteria and fungi.

The enzyme is also released extracellularly during inflammation, where it contributes to tissue damage and the generation of reactive oxygen species. Elevated levels of myeloperoxidase in plasma or other bodily fluids are often associated with inflammatory conditions and cardiovascular disease, serving as a biomarker for oxidative stress and neutrophil activation.
