Murtuvatojen is a Finnish term that translates loosely to "broken waves" or "crashing waves." It refers to the phenomenon of waves breaking, typically as they approach the shore or encounter obstacles. This breaking is caused by the wave's energy being dissipated as its base slows down due to friction with the seabed or other surfaces, while its crest continues to move forward, leading to instability and the characteristic curl and splash.

The process of wave breaking is influenced by several factors including water depth, wave height, and wave period. In shallow water, the seabed exerts a drag force on the lower part of the wave, causing it to slow down and steepen.
