Murkelnloch

Murkelnloch is a small, largely uninhabited island located in the Baltic Sea. It is situated approximately three kilometers off the coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The island is characterized by its low-lying terrain, consisting mainly of sand dunes and sparse vegetation. Its natural habitat supports a variety of bird species, making it a significant site for birdwatching and a protected area for nesting birds.

Access to Murkelnloch is restricted, primarily for ecological preservation purposes. Boat landings are generally not permitted to minimize disturbance to the wildlife. The island's name, translating roughly to "wormhole" or "grub hole," is thought to allude to its small size and perhaps its humble appearance. Despite its diminutive stature, Murkelnloch plays a role in the local marine ecosystem. Its sandy shores and shallow waters provide feeding grounds for certain fish and invertebrates. The island is not a tourist destination and lacks any permanent infrastructure. Its significance lies almost exclusively in its ecological value.
