Muovisaasteen, or plastic pollution, refers to the accumulation of plastic objects and particles in the Earth's environment. This pollution affects natural habitats, ecosystems, and living organisms. Plastic is a durable material, meaning it does not easily decompose. This characteristic contributes to its persistent presence in the environment.

The primary sources of plastic pollution include discarded plastic products, such as packaging, bags, bottles, and microplastics from cosmetics and synthetic textiles. Entanglement in plastic waste also poses a significant threat. On land, plastic pollution can degrade soil quality and harm terrestrial wildlife.
