Muovikassien, which translates to "plastic bags" in Finnish, refers to the common single-use plastic bags used for carrying goods. These bags are typically made from polyethylene, a versatile and inexpensive plastic. Their widespread use for convenience in retail and grocery shopping has led to significant environmental concerns globally.

The primary environmental issue associated with muovikassien is their persistence in the environment. Plastic bags do not readily biodegrade, meaning they can remain in landfills or natural ecosystems for hundreds of years, breaking down into microplastics. This pollution can harm wildlife through ingestion or entanglement and can contaminate soil and water sources.
