Muotoutuva

Muotoutuva is a Finnish present active participle derived from the verb muotoutua, meaning to take shape or to form. In Finnish grammar, muotoutuva functions as an adjective-like form that describes something that is currently in the process of taking form or developing. It can modify a noun in attributive position or appear in predicative constructions when describing ongoing change.

Forming muotoutuva follows the regular pattern for present active participles in Finnish: the stem muotoutu- plus the participial ending -va, yielding muotoutuva. The participle agrees with its noun in number; in practice, it often remains invariable in gender, as Finnish lacks grammatical gender. It is common in descriptive or technical contexts to express ongoing development, design processes, or phenomena that are not yet fixed.

Examples help illustrate its use. muotoutuva muoto refers to a form that is taking shape. muotoutuva rakennus would describe a building under construction, though more natural phrasing in everyday Finnish might be rakennus, joka muotoutuu. muotoutuva suunnitelma refers to a plan still in development. In literary or journalistic contexts, muotoutuva can convey change and potential, emphasizing process over finished state.
