Muodonlajit

Muodonlajit are categories in linguistic morphology that group words according to their inflectional behavior. A muodonlaji defines a paradigm: the regular pattern of forms a lexeme can take to encode grammatical information such as tense, mood, voice, number, person, case, or degree. Forms within a muodonlaji share the same structural template, differing mainly by affixes, stem alternations, or irregular replacements (suppletion).

Languages vary in the number and nature of muodonlajit. Some languages have a few broad muodonlajit that cover many forms, while others have many distinct patterns, particularly those with rich case systems or extensive verb conjugations. For nouns and adjectives, muodonlajit correspond to declension patterns and their case-number endings. For verbs, muodonlajit correspond to conjugation patterns across tense, aspect, mood, voice, person, and number. Pronouns and numerals may also exhibit distinct muodonlajit.
