Munuaisarvoin is a Finnish term that translates to "kidney stone" in English. Kidney stones are hard, solid deposits that form in the kidneys. They are made of minerals and salts that are found in urine. Kidney stones can vary in size and shape, and they can be very painful when they pass through the urinary tract.

The exact cause of kidney stones is not always known, but several factors can increase a person's risk. These include dehydration, a diet high in certain minerals and salts, family history of kidney stones, and certain medical conditions such as gout or inflammatory bowel disease. Obesity and certain medications can also contribute to their formation.

Symptoms of kidney stones can include severe pain in the side and back, pain that radiates to the lower abdomen and groin, pain that comes in waves, pain or burning sensation when urinating, pink, red, or brown urine, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, and nausea and vomiting. Small kidney stones may pass on their own without causing significant symptoms.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, urine tests, and imaging studies such as X-rays, CT scans, or ultrasounds. Treatment for kidney stones depends on their size, type, and location. Small stones may be treated with pain medication and increased fluid intake to help them pass naturally. Larger stones or those causing severe symptoms may require medical procedures like lithotripsy (using shock waves to break up stones) or surgery.

Prevention strategies for kidney stones include drinking plenty of fluids, particularly water, to dilute urine. Dietary modifications, such as reducing sodium intake and limiting consumption of certain high-oxalate foods, may also be recommended depending on the type of stone.
