Munky
Munky is the stage name of James Shaffer, an American guitarist best known as a founding member of the nu metal band Korn. As one of the band’s two guitarists in its early lineup, Munky helped shape Korn’s distinctive downtuned, heavy guitar sound that became a defining element of the late 1990s metal scene. He joined Korn in the band’s early years and contributed to the group’s creative development and commercial success, influencing the genre with riffs that emphasize rhythm and aggression. In addition to his work with Korn, Munky has pursued side projects and collaborations, including the formation of Fear and the Nervous System, a project that explores experimental metal textures outside the main band’s material. Across his career, he has been recognized for a straightforward, groove-oriented riffing style, a heavy tone, and collaborative work with fellow Korn members.
The name Munky also appears as a playful or informal spelling of the word “monkey,” a usage
