Mundgeschwüren

Mundgeschwüren, also known as canker sores or aphthous ulcers, are common, non-contagious sores that appear inside the mouth. They are typically small, round or oval, and white or yellowish with a red border. The exact cause of mouth sores is not fully understood, but they are thought to be related to a combination of factors including genetics, stress, minor mouth injuries, certain foods, hormonal changes, and deficiencies in vitamins like B12 or iron.

Mouth sores can occur on the soft tissues of the mouth, such as the inside of the lips, cheeks, tongue, or at the base of the gums. While painful, they usually do not pose a serious health risk and typically heal on their own within one to two weeks. Pain management is often the primary focus of treatment, which can include over-the-counter pain relievers, topical anesthetic gels, or rinses. Avoiding trigger foods, such as spicy or acidic items, can also help prevent irritation.

In most cases, mouth sores are a minor inconvenience. However, if they are unusually large, recur frequently, are extremely painful, or persist for longer than two weeks, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional or dentist. These symptoms could indicate an underlying medical condition that requires further investigation and treatment. Good oral hygiene practices, while not preventing the sores, can help keep the mouth clean and reduce the risk of secondary infections.
