Munchkin

Munchkin is a term with multiple notable uses in literature and popular culture. In L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels, Munchkins are the small, humanlike inhabitants of Munchkin Country, known for their cheerful demeanor. The term has since entered common usage as a lighthearted nickname for a small or cute person, though it can be perceived as insulting depending on context and tone.

Munchkin is also the title of a popular satirical card game published by Steve Jackson Games. First released in 2001, the game parodies fantasy role-playing games by letting players explore dungeon-like scenarios, acquire treasure, and gain levels through defeating monsters and other players. Gameplay favors humor, interaction, and opportunistic play more than strict simulation, with various expansion packs adding new cards and mechanics.

Over the years, Munchkin has grown into a franchise. There are many expansions and spin-offs, including board game adaptations such as Munchkin Quest, and licensed editions that explore different themes.
