Munasarjakasvain

Munasarjakasvain refers to a growth or lump that forms on an ovary. Ovaries are part of the female reproductive system, located on either side of the uterus. These tumors can vary greatly in size and composition.

Most ovarian tumors are benign, meaning they are not cancerous. These are often referred to as functional cysts and are related to the normal menstrual cycle. They usually develop from follicles that release eggs or from the corpus luteum that forms after ovulation. Functional cysts typically disappear on their own within a few menstrual cycles and rarely cause symptoms.

However, some ovarian tumors can be more complex and may require medical attention. These can include dermoid cysts, cystadenomas, and fibromas. While still benign, these may grow larger or cause symptoms such as pelvic pain, bloating, or a feeling of fullness.

A smaller percentage of ovarian tumors are malignant, meaning they are cancerous. Ovarian cancer is a serious condition, and early detection is crucial. Symptoms of malignant ovarian tumors can be vague and include persistent abdominal discomfort, changes in bowel or bladder habits, and unexplained weight loss.

Diagnosis typically involves a pelvic examination, ultrasound, and blood tests. If a tumor is detected, further investigation, such as a CT scan or MRI, may be necessary. Treatment depends on the type, size, and stage of the tumor, as well as the patient's age and overall health. Benign tumors may be monitored or surgically removed, while cancerous tumors often require a combination of surgery and chemotherapy.
