Munandid

Munandid is an extinct genus of hadrosaurid dinosaurs that lived during the Late Cretaceous period. Its name is derived from the word "munandi," which means "sleep" or "following sleep" in Mongolian.

The genus Munandid has been identified from fossil remains found in the Djadochta Formation, a geological formation located in the Omnogov Province of Mongolia. These finds were made by paleontologists during the early 20th century. Fossil evidence has been limited to partial remains of its skull, including the eye orbits, the snout, and part of a mandible.

Munandid has been classified as a member of the hadrosaurid family, a group of duck-billed dinosaurs. Specimen analysis suggests Munandid possessed characteristics that both physically and morphologically separate it from other recognized species within the hadrosaurid order. Despite these distinctions, the exact position of Munandid amongst the hadrosaurids remains somewhat speculative.

The temporal range of Munandid extends to the later stages of the Late Cretaceous, within the interval dated between 65 million and 71 million years before the present. Its geographic distribution during this time can be associated with a former or indeed current Mongolian landscape.

Research on Munandid has been subject to limited review, and multiple opinions are present in the field of paleontology regarding its classification. Any conclusions made about its lineage and possibly related cladistic affiliations are less than definitive and are matters of continued scientific debate.
