Mumonkan
The Mumonkan, also known as The Gateless Barrier, is a classic collection of Zen Buddhist koans. Compiled in China in the early 13th century by the Chan/Zen master Wumen Hui-k’ai (Wu-men Huikai), the work gathers 48 koans presented as cases, each followed by a short verse and Wumen’s own commentary. The text is written in classical Chinese and has influenced how koan study is conducted in later Zen schools, particularly in the Rinzai tradition.
Each case in the Mumonkan presents a brief scene or dialogue intended to point beyond ordinary reasoning.
