Multivarietal

Multivarietal is an adjective used to describe something that is composed of or involves multiple varieties. This term is most commonly encountered in agriculture and horticulture, particularly in the context of wine production. A multivarietal wine, for instance, is a blend of grapes from different varietals, such as a Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend. This practice is distinct from single-varietal wines, which are made predominantly from a single type of grape. Blending varietals allows winemakers to achieve specific flavor profiles, aromas, and structures that might not be possible with a single grape.

Beyond wine, the term can be applied to other agricultural products. For example, a farmer might plant a multivarietal field of corn to increase biodiversity and reduce the risk of disease spreading through a monoculture. In botany, a multivarietal collection might refer to a group of different cultivars or subspecies of a particular plant species. The core concept remains the presence of more than one distinct type within a larger category.
