Multipleksoinnin

Multipleksoinnin is a Finnish term that translates to "multiplexing" in English. It refers to a technique used in telecommunications and computer networking to combine multiple signals or data streams into a single channel. This process allows for more efficient use of available bandwidth and resources.

There are several types of multiplexing. Time-division multiplexing (TDM) divides the available time on a channel into slots, allocating a slot to each signal or data stream in turn. Frequency-division multiplexing (FDM) divides the channel's frequency spectrum into different bands, with each signal or data stream assigned to a unique band. Statistical multiplexing (StatMux) is a more advanced form that dynamically allocates bandwidth based on the actual demand of each data stream, offering higher efficiency than TDM or FDM, especially for bursty traffic. Code-division multiplexing (CDM) uses unique codes to differentiate signals, allowing them to share the same frequency band and time slot simultaneously.

Multiplexing is a fundamental concept in modern communication systems, enabling technologies such as telephone networks, cellular communication, and the internet. Without multiplexing, the capacity of communication channels would be severely limited, making it impractical to support the vast amount of data transmitted daily. The goal is always to maximize the number of users or data streams that can be supported by a given communication link.
