Mullaittivus

Mullaittivu is a town and the administrative headquarters of the Mullaittivu District in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. Located on the northeastern coast of the island, it was historically a significant fishing and trading center. The area is known for its natural beauty, including lagoons and beaches.

During the Sri Lankan Civil War, Mullaittivu was a strategically important location and a stronghold of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The town and surrounding district experienced significant conflict and displacement. The final major battles of the civil war occurred in the Mullaittivu area in 2009, leading to the defeat of the LTTE.

Following the end of the conflict, efforts have been underway for reconstruction and rehabilitation in Mullaittivu. The region is gradually recovering, with renewed focus on its traditional livelihoods such as fishing and agriculture. The Mullaittivu District is characterized by a significant Tamil population and its cultural heritage is deeply rooted in the region. The development of infrastructure and economic opportunities remains a priority for the area's future.
