Muistisääntöjä, often translated as mnemonics or memory aids, are techniques used to improve memory recall. These methods typically involve associating information with easily remembered patterns, images, or words. The goal is to make abstract or complex data more concrete and memorable.

One common type of muistisääntö is the acronym, where the first letters of a series of words are combined to form a new, pronounceable word. For example, the word "ROY G. BIV" is a muistisääntö for the colors of the rainbow: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet. Another approach is the acrostic, where the first letters of a series of words form a phrase or sentence that helps recall the original information.

Visual imagery is another powerful muistisääntö technique. This involves creating vivid mental pictures that link the items to be remembered. For instance, if trying to remember a grocery list, one might imagine a giant loaf of bread juggling apples. The more unusual or striking the image, the easier it is to recall. The method of loci, also known as the memory palace, is an ancient technique that uses familiar locations to store memories. By mentally placing items in specific spots within a known environment, one can later "walk through" the location to retrieve the information.
