Muistiimmunivasteen

Muistiimmunivasteen refers to the immunological memory that develops after an initial exposure to an antigen. This memory allows the immune system to respond more quickly and effectively upon subsequent encounters with the same pathogen or antigen. It is a cornerstone of adaptive immunity and is the basis for vaccination.

When the body first encounters a pathogen, such as a virus or bacterium, the immune system mounts a primary response. This involves the activation of B cells and T cells that are specific to the antigens present on the pathogen. Some of these activated cells differentiate into memory cells, which are long-lived. These memory cells remain in the body, circulating in the blood and lymph, or residing in lymphoid tissues.

Upon re-exposure to the same antigen, these memory cells are rapidly activated. Memory B cells can quickly proliferate and differentiate into plasma cells that produce large amounts of antibodies. Memory T cells can also be quickly activated to perform their effector functions, such as killing infected cells or helping to coordinate the immune response. This secondary immune response is typically much faster, stronger, and more prolonged than the primary response, often preventing the development of disease or significantly reducing its severity.

The development and maintenance of immunological memory are crucial for long-term protection against infectious diseases. Vaccines work by introducing antigens to the body in a safe form, stimulating a primary immune response and thus generating immunological memory without causing illness. This prepares the immune system to effectively combat the actual pathogen if encountered later.
