Mothras

Mothras are a group of giant moth-like monsters that appear in Toho's Godzilla film universe. The term encompasses the various incarnations of Mothra, the benevolent guardian deity worshiped by the inhabitants of Infant Island. Mothra first appeared in the 1961 film Mothra and has since become one of the franchise's most enduring symbols. Across different films, Mothra is depicted not as a single creature but as a lineage of beings at different life stages, typically including two larval forms and a winged adult, as well as the later "Queen Mothra" in some continuities. The Shobijin, two tiny fairies who speak for Mothra, serve as her emissaries in most stories.

In-universe, Mothra is associated with protection, fertility, and the balance of nature. Her larval forms are often portrayed as guardians of specific habitats, while the imago uses flight and mystical energy to defend Earth against threats. Common abilities include high-speed flight, energy projection or barrier creation, and, in some continuities, a characteristic invocation or shriek that can both allure and provoke opponents. Mothras frequently ally with humanity or with other monsters against more destructive foes, including Godzilla in several films.

Culturally, Mothra ranks among Toho’s most recognizable monsters and has appeared in cross-media tie-ins, including books, anime, video games, and merchandise. The concept of a family of Mothras across films reflects the franchise’s interest in cyclical time, guardianship, and environmental themes.
