Motels

Motels are a form of lodging designed for motorists, combining motor and hotel concepts. The name is a portmanteau of motor hotel. They typically feature a low-rise structure with exterior corridors and parking spaces immediately in front of each room, allowing guests to access their door from their car.

Originating in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s, motels expanded with the growth of highways and car culture. They offered affordable, convenient stays for short visits, often located along major roads and later near freeway exits.

Modern motels vary widely: some are part of national chains offering standardized rooms and limited services, while others are independently owned. Common amenities include private bathrooms, air conditioning, and televisions; many provide free parking, and some offer pools, laundries, and continental breakfasts. Because of their exterior access and parking, motels are typically cheaper than full-service hotels, though prices vary. In recent decades, many motels have been renovated or rebranded to appeal to new markets, including retro or boutique travelers, while others have closed.
