MoriquendiElves

MoriquendiElves, commonly called Moriquendi, are the Elves in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium who did not undertake the Great Journey to Aman (Valinor) and thus did not behold the light of the Two Trees. The name Moriquendi comes from Quenya and translates as "Elves of the Darkness."

The distinction between Moriquendi and Calaquendi—"Elves of the Light" who reached Valinor and witnessed the Trees—is one of origin and experience rather than geography. Moriquendi includes all Elves who remained in Middle-earth or did not complete the voyage during the Years of the Trees, including groups such as the Avari (those who refused the summons) and the Sindar (Grey Elves) who stayed in Beleriand.

Although Moriquendi did not share the Valinórean experience, they developed substantial cultures, languages, and realms in Middle-earth. Sindarin became a dominant Elvish language among Moriquendi in Beleriand, and Elvish kingdoms arose under Sindar leadership in regions like Doriath and other realms, with other Moriquendi peoples spread across the East and South of Middle-earth.

In Tolkien's writings, Moriquendi is a broad, descriptive term rather than a single polity, used to classify Elves by their journey status and historical path rather than by nation or kinship. The concept highlights the diversity of Elven history in the absence of the shared Valinórean experience.
