It is characterized by a rhythmic tapping or knocking sound produced by the engine, often accompanied by a loss of power and reduced fuel efficiency. The term "moottorihäly" is derived from Finnish, where "moottori" means engine and "häly" means knock or tapping.

The primary cause of moottorihäly is the autoignition of fuel-air mixtures in the combustion chamber before the spark plug fires. This can happen due to several factors, including:

1. High compression ratios, which increase the temperature and pressure in the combustion chamber.

2. Low octane fuel, which has a lower resistance to autoignition.

3. Incorrect ignition timing, which can cause the spark to occur too early or too late.

4. Engine wear, such as worn piston rings or valves, which can lead to increased compression and reduced cooling.

Moottorihäly can be detected by listening for the characteristic knocking sound, which is often more pronounced at lower engine speeds and loads. It can also be identified by the engine's rough idle and reduced performance. To mitigate moottorihäly, drivers can adjust the ignition timing, use higher octane fuel, and address any engine wear issues. In severe cases, the engine may require more significant repairs or replacement.
