MontogomeryDrüsen

MontogomeryDrüsen, also known as Montgomery's tubercles or areolar glands, are small, elevated bumps located on the areola, the pigmented area surrounding the nipple. These glands are a normal anatomical feature and are present in both males and females. During puberty, their size and prominence can increase, particularly in females.

The primary function of MontogomeryDrüsen is the secretion of an oily substance called sebum. This sebum acts as a natural lubricant and antiseptic, helping to keep the nipple and areola moisturized and protected from infection. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the activity of these glands often increases, and the secretions may become more noticeable. The scent of these secretions is believed to play a role in guiding newborns to the nipple for feeding.

While generally asymptomatic, MontogomeryDrüsen can sometimes become temporarily enlarged or inflamed, which may lead to mild discomfort. This is often associated with hormonal changes. They are distinct from milk ducts and do not produce milk. Their presence is considered a sign of normal physiological development and function, particularly in relation to reproductive health.
