Montieths
A Montieth is a type of decorative bowl or basin, typically made of silver, that was popular in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Its primary function was to chill wine bottles or glasses. The distinctive feature of a Montieth is its removable rim, which was often scalloped and had projecting notches. Bottles or glasses would be placed neck-down between these notches, allowing them to cool in iced water within the basin without their labels becoming submerged or their contents diluted.
