Montenegrothea
Montenegrothea is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae. It contains a single known species, Montenegrothea carajasensis. This species is endemic to Brazil, specifically found in the Carajás Mountains of Pará state. The plant is a small shrub, typically reaching heights of around 50 centimeters. Its leaves are simple, opposite, and ovate, with a glossy green upper surface. The flowers are small and white, borne in axillary clusters. Montenegrothea carajasensis is found in a specific habitat, growing in the understory of lowland tropical forests, often in association with iron-rich soils. Its limited distribution and specific ecological requirements make it a species of conservation interest. Research into the genus Montenegrothea is ongoing, with efforts focused on understanding its taxonomy, ecology, and potential threats to its survival. The discovery and description of Montenegrothea carajasensis contributed to the botanical knowledge of the Brazilian Amazon.
