Montacute

Montacute is a village and civil parish in the South Somerset district of Somerset, England. It is situated approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Yeovil and 13 miles (21 km) east of Taunton. The village lies at the foot of St Michael's Hill, on which stands Montacute Castle, a medieval motte-and-bailey fortification.

Historically, Montacute was known for its Augustinian priory, Montacute Priory, founded in the 11th century. The priory church, now the parish church of St Peter and St Paul, remains a prominent feature of the village. The village itself has a rich history, with evidence of Roman occupation in the vicinity.

The village is characterized by its honey-coloured hamstone buildings, typical of the region. Montacute House, a magnificent Elizabethan mansion managed by the National Trust, is a major attraction. The house, with its elaborate gardens, is a significant example of Tudor and Jacobean architecture and has been used as a filming location for various productions, including "Sense and Sensibility" and "Wolf Hall."

Montacute has a village hall, a primary school, and several public houses. The surrounding countryside offers opportunities for walking and exploring, with routes like the Monarch's Way passing nearby. The village's strategic location and historical significance have made it a popular destination for tourists and residents alike. The River Yeo flows through the parish.
