Monotsükliliste, or monocyclic compounds, are chemical compounds that contain a single closed ring as the core of their molecular structure. They can be carbocyclic or heterocyclic, and may be saturated, unsaturated, or aromatic.

Ring sizes commonly range from three to seven members. The most common monocyclic rings are cyclopropane, cyclobutane, cyclopentane, cyclohexane, and cycloheptane. Aromatic monocyclic rings include benzene and heteroaromatic rings such as pyridine, furan, and thiophene. The properties of monocyclic compounds depend on ring size, degree of unsaturation, and substituents; small rings often exhibit ring strain that influences reactivity, while aromatic monocyclic rings are typically stable and undergo characteristic substitution reactions.

Applications of monocyclic structures span pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, materials, and fragrances, where the single ring serves as a core motif or building block. In drug design, the monocyclic scaffold can act as a pharmacophore or a modular unit for further modification.

Synthesis and analysis: monocyclic compounds are formed by cyclization of linear precursors or ring-closure reactions, and their structures are typically analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and, when possible, X-ray crystallography. Monocyclic motifs remain fundamental in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry due to their simplicity, versatility, and breadth of possible substitutions.
