Monoatomisessa

Monoatomisessa is a Finnish term commonly used to describe a state, substance, or system that consists of single atoms rather than molecules. In scientific English, the analogous concept is monatomic. The idea applies across phases, indicating that the basic unit is an individual atom, not a bound pair or group of atoms.

In chemistry and physics, monatomic substances are most readily associated with noble gases—helium, neon, argon, krypton, and xenon. In the gas phase they exist as isolated atoms and do not form stable chemical bonds with neighboring atoms. This monatomic nature also extends to their condensed phases at low temperatures, where the atoms remain individual units held together only by weak van der Waals forces, rather than by covalent or ionic bonds.

Hydrogen can be monatomic under special conditions, such as very high energy or in plasma, but under ordinary conditions it predominantly forms H2 molecules. Most other elements in everyday conditions form diatomic molecules (for example O2, N2) or extend into extended solid lattices, so they are not described as monatomic in common contexts.

Applications of the monatomic concept appear in studies of ideal gases, astrophysical plasmas, and various vapor-phase phenomena where atoms are treated as discrete, non-bonded units. In Finnish scientific usage, monoatomisessa tilassa or monoatominen aine appears to denote states or substances where the fundamental unit is a single atom, emphasizing the absence of persistent chemical bonding between neighboring atoms.
