Monisyisyys

Monisyisyys is a Finnish term referring to the state or quality of having multiple meanings, interpretations, or aspects. The word combines moni- "many" with the abstract-noun suffix -syys and is used across humanities to describe the complexity and multiplicity inherent in objects, texts, and phenomena.

In linguistics and semiotics, monisyisyys describes polysemy or semantic richness: a single linguistic form can carry several related meanings, with interpretation shaped by context, culture, and discourse. It is distinguished from simple ambiguity by emphasizing legitimate plurality rather than error; it is a concept often invoked in interpretation studies and translation research.
