Monegasque

Monegasque refers to the people who are native to or have a connection with the Principality of Monaco, a small sovereign city-state located on the French Riviera in Europe. The term can also refer to the Monegasque language, an Indo-European language that is the official language of Monaco.

Demographically, Monégasques are a small population that makes up around 30% of the total population of Monaco. The remainder of the population consists of French, Italian, and other European expatriates, as well as people from other parts of the world. Many Monégasques have French as their first language, and some also speak Italian.

The Monegasque language is a Romance language, closely related to and influenced by the Ligurian and Occitan languages, which are spoken in the regions of Liguria and Occitania, respectively. Monegasque has a distinct grammar and vocabulary that reflects its unique history and cultural heritage. However, due to the country's small size and the widespread use of French and other international languages, the usage of Monegasque as a spoken language is limited.

Monégasques are predominantly Roman Catholic, reflecting the country's historical and cultural ties with the Catholic Church. Traditional Monegasque customs and traditions continue to be celebrated in Monaco, including the Festa di San Rèmi, a festival held in September to honor Saint Remigius.

Due to its unique cultural and linguistic heritage, the Monegasque identity continues to be celebrated and preserved in Monaco, where it plays an important role in the country's history, traditions, and national identity.
