Mokulaarinen

Mokulaarinen is a term used in worldbuilding and conlang communities to denote the language family spoken by the fictional Mokulan people. It functions as an umbrella descriptor for the Mokul language and its dialects, as well as for cultural artifacts associated with Mokula.

Etymology: The name is formed from a fictional root Moku- combined with the Finnish demonym suffix -lainen, following a convention common in Finnish toponyms (for example, suomalainen).

Linguistic features: Mokulaarinen languages are typically described as agglutinative with a subject–object–verb base order, rich case marking, and vowel harmony. Phonology commonly includes a vowel inventory with front and back contrasts and occasional nasalization; consonants include stops, fricatives, and a glottal stop. The lexicon often reflects maritime trade and coastal life, with some loanwords from neighboring island languages.

Dialectal variation and writing: Dialects vary by island and trading network; the Mokul script is frequently depicted as a syllabary or abugida in worldbuilding texts, with some authors assigning logographic elements to proper names and cultural terms.

In fiction and constructivist linguistics circles, Mokulaarinen is used as an example of linguistic typology and ethnolinguistic imagination, illustrating how a fictional language can be structured and embedded in a culture without being tied to a real-world reference.
