Mohiam

Mohiam, fully Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, is a fictional character in Frank Herbert's Dune universe. She is a Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother, a senior member of the order responsible for political guidance, memory access, and the Bene Gesserit breeding program aimed at producing the Kwisatz Haderach.

Within the series, Mohiam oversees the Bene Gesserit’s long-term plans and exerts influence over the Imperium’s politics. She is most notable for administering the gom jabbar test to Paul Atreides, placing a poison-tipped needle at his neck while a pain box is applied to his hand. The test is designed to reveal humanity by forcing Paul to restrain reflexive pain and follow reason over instinct. Mohiam’s examination of Paul signals the Bene Gesserit’s recognition of his exceptional potential and foreshadows the role he may play in their centuries-spanning breeding program.

In the narrative, Mohiam embodies Bene Gesserit authority and operates at the intersection of noble families and imperial power, interacting with House Atreides and the imperial court as part of the order’s broader strategic aims. In the original novels, her name is commonly given as Reverend Mother Mohiam, with the full name Gaius Helen Mohiam appearing in some sources.
