Modernistit

Modernistit, literally "the Modernists" in Finnish, is a term used to describe adherents of modernism in Finnish art, architecture, and design. The label historically covers architects, designers, painters, and writers who championed functionalism, reduced ornament, and the use of new materials and production methods during the early to mid-20th century.

Origins and aims: Following World War I, Modernistit drew on European currents such as Bauhaus and De Stijl. They emphasized rational design, standardization, and social utility. In architecture, this translated into clean lines, flat roofs, open interiors, and the use of concrete, glass, and steel. In graphic design and the fine arts, abstraction and streamlined forms were common.

Key figures and works: In Finland, architects such as Eliel Saarinen and Alvar Aalto are associated with Modernist tendencies, as are various designers and artists who produced public buildings, housing, and industrial design from the 1920s to the 1950s.
