Modena

Modena is a city in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy and the capital of the province of Modena. It lies in the Po Valley near the Apennine foothills, about midway between Bologna and Reggio Emilia.

The historic center is notable for its ensemble of medieval and Romanesque architecture, including the Modena Cathedral (Duomo), the Ghirlandina bell tower, and Piazza Grande. This group was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 for its outstanding example of Norman and Romanesque architecture in northern Italy.

Key landmarks include the Cathedral of Modena, begun in 1099, renowned for its sculptural decoration and mosaic floors, and the 12th-century Ghirlandina Tower, which offers panoramic views of the city.

Modena is known for its culinary traditions, especially Aceto Balsamico di Modena, a regional balsamic vinegar widely used in Italian cuisine. The city also features pasta specialties such as tortellini and tagliatelle al ragù, and a strong automotive heritage connected to Enzo Ferrari, who was born in Modena; the Museo Enzo Ferrari commemorates his legacy.

The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia is a major higher education institution in the area, and the city hosts museums and cultural events, including musical and culinary festivals.
