Modelis

Modelis is a hypothetical, cross-domain modeling framework designed to standardize the specification, execution, and evaluation of computational models. It defines a modular architecture, a formal specification language, and a shared library of reusable components to support modeling from simple deterministic processes to complex agent-based systems.

The term Modelis has appeared in academic discussions as a conceptual framework to improve model interoperability and reproducibility across disciplines. It is not tied to a single software package or institution but describes a family of design principles that can be implemented in different environments.

Core to Modelis is a component-based architecture. Models are described using the Modelis Description Language (MDL), which specifies state variables, transition rules, observation models, and interfaces. A run-time engine executes MDL-described models, while a Model Registry stores metadata, versions, and provenance to aid replication and comparison.

Modelis has been proposed for use in fields such as systems biology, urban simulation, economics, and social science. It emphasizes reproducibility, parameter tracing, and the ability to substitute modules to compare alternative hypotheses without changing the surrounding framework.

The Modelis concept encourages open collaboration, shared benchmarks, and open licensing of implementations. Critics note that achieving true interoperability requires substantial agreement on semantics and interfaces and may pose a learning curve and formalism for practitioners.
