Modalitetet

Modalitetet, or modality, is a concept in linguistics and philosophy that concerns how a proposition relates to possibility, necessity, or obligation. It captures the speaker's stance toward the asserted content and can influence how listeners interpret truth conditions, certainty, or obligation.

In linguistics, modality is commonly categorized into epistemic, deontic, and dynamic modalities. Epistemic modality expresses the speaker's degree of certainty about a proposition (for example may, might, must). Deontic modality concerns permission, obligation, and prohibition (such as may, must, should). Dynamic modality relates to the subject's ability, willingness, or propensity to perform an action, and is sometimes analyzed as a sub-type of modality or as an aspect of the verb's semantics.

Modal realizations surface across languages through auxiliary verbs or mood systems, as well as through adverbs and special verbal endings. English, for instance, uses modal auxiliaries like can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, and would. Other languages may express modality with subjunctive mood, verb affixes, or evidential markings, showing that modal meaning can be encoded in diverse grammatical resources. Modality often interacts with tense, aspect, and evidentiality, creating nuanced temporal and epistemic profiles for utterances.

Scholars study modality to explain how speakers express uncertainty, permission, obligation, or capability and how listeners interpret these attitudes. In philosophy of language, modality connects to possible worlds semantics, where sentences are evaluated across potential situations.
