Mniszek

Mniszek, or Taraxacum officinale, is a herbaceous perennial plant in the family Asteraceae. In Polish, the plant is commonly known as mniszek lekarski or mniszek pospolity, and in English as the common dandelion. It is widely distributed and naturalized in many temperate regions around the world.

Description: The plant forms a rosette of lobed leaves at ground level. A hollow flowering stem rises to bear a bright yellow composite flower head, typically composed of many ray florets. After flowering, the head develops into a spherical seed head with a cottony pappus that disperses seeds by wind. The plant produces a milky latex when crushed. Roots are thick and taproot-like, useful in some traditional preparations.

Distribution and habitat: Native to Europe and western Asia, mniszek has become naturalized globally. It tolerates a broad range of soils and climates, commonly thriving in lawns, meadows, pastures, and disturbed ground. It prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade and compacted soils. Reproduction is primarily by seed, though established rosettes can persist in favorable conditions.

Uses and properties: Young leaves are edible and can be added to salads or cooked as greens; roots can be dried and roasted as a coffee substitute; flowers may be used to make wines or teas. In traditional medicine, mniszek is reputed to have diuretic effects and to support liver and digestive function. Phytochemicals include sesquiterpene lactones, phenolics, inulin, and vitamins and minerals. Scientific evidence for medicinal efficacy is mixed and often limited.
