Mjukvävnadstekniker, often translated as soft tissue engineering, is a field that combines cell biology, materials science, and engineering to repair, replace, or regenerate human tissues. The primary goal is to create functional tissues that can restore or improve the function of damaged or diseased body parts. This involves a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together experts from various scientific and medical disciplines.

The process typically begins with cells, either taken from the patient (autologous), a donor (allogeneic), or a stem cell source. These cells are then cultured and expanded in a laboratory setting. Simultaneously, a scaffold is created, which serves as a temporary structure for the cells to grow on and organize into. These scaffolds can be made from natural or synthetic materials and are designed to mimic the extracellular matrix of the native tissue. The cells are then seeded onto the scaffold, and the construct is cultured under specific conditions to encourage tissue development.
