Mivelet

Mivelet is a term used in the field of microfluidics to describe a compact, actuated valve element designed to regulate liquid flow within microfabricated channels. The concept serves as a generic reference for a small valve component that can be integrated into lab-on-a-chip systems, enabling precise control over fluid handling in miniature devices. The word mivelet is a contraction of micro-valve element and is used primarily in theoretical discussions and some early design proposals.

In proposed implementations, a mivelet consists of a sealed chamber connected to a microchannel, where an actuator adjusts the opening to modulate flow. Actuation methods commonly referenced include pneumatic, electrostatic, thermal, and magnetic approaches, each offering different trade-offs in response time, power consumption, and fabrication complexity. Materials for mivelets range from polymers to silicon or glass, chosen for chemical compatibility and biocompatibility with the target fluids.

Applications for mivelets are broad within microfluidics, including precise dosing, droplet generation, sample distribution, and automated reagent sequencing in diagnostic assays and synthetic biology workflows. They are valued for potential benefits such as small size, low power needs, rapid response, and easy integration with other microfluidic components.

Challenges associated with mivelets include reliable fabrication at wafer-scale, leak-tight sealing under varying pressures, long-term actuation fatigue, and compatibility with diverse chemical and biological samples. While the term appears in some design discussions, mivelet is not yet a standardized or universally adopted designation in mainstream microfluidics.
