Mittetoksilised

Mittetoksilised is a term used chiefly in Estonian to describe substances that are not toxic under typical exposure conditions. The word combines mitte (not) and toksilised (toxic). In everyday language it means non-toxic or of low toxicity; it is not a formal regulatory category in most jurisdictions.

Assessment of non-toxicity relies on toxicology, including measures of acute toxicity (such as LD50), chronic toxicity, carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, and reproductive toxicity, among other endpoints. A substance labeled mittetoksilised is generally regarded as having low acute toxicity and minimal risk at normal doses, but this depends on the exposure route, amount, and species. The term does not guarantee safety at all doses or exposures; even non-toxic substances can be harmful in large quantities or if misused (ingestion, inhalation, skin irritation).

Common examples in consumer contexts include water, table salt (sodium chloride), sugar (sucrose), glycerin, and certain edible oils. Labels may use mittetoksilised to indicate ingredients perceived as inert, but the designation is not a substitute for established safety labeling such as warnings about irritation or allergens.

Limitations include the absence of a universal standard for what qualifies as mittetoksilised. What is considered non-toxic for humans may have ecological or environmental impacts, and regulatory frameworks use specific hazard statements and threshold values. Consequently, the interpretation of mittetoksilised can vary by country, field (food, cosmetics, cleaning products), and context of use.
