Mitteldurchmesser is a geometric reference used in engineering to describe the diameter of the mid-surface of a circular cross-section, typically for hollow cylinders or rings. It represents a single size that lies midway between the inner and outer diameters and is convenient for rough calculations or when a uniform representation is desired.

The standard definition is straightforward: Dm = (Do + Di) / 2, where Do is the outer diameter and Di is the inner diameter. For a solid rod, Di equals Do, and the Mitteldurchmesser equals the actual diameter. The concept extends to any hollow circular section where a mid-surface characterizes the geometry rather than the actual inner or outer edge.

Applications and use arise in practical design and analysis. The mid-diameter provides a convenient basis for estimating the circumference of the mid-surface (C = π Dm) and for rough assessments of bending stiffness, surface length, or weight distribution of hollow circular sections. In thin-walled structures, Dm is often used to simplify calculations while preserving order of magnitude accuracy; precise cross-sectional properties should still be computed from Do and Di when high accuracy is required.
