Mittebinaarsus

Mittebinaarsus refers to a person's gender identity not being exclusively male or female. It is an umbrella term that encompasses a wide range of gender experiences that fall outside the traditional binary of man and woman. People who identify as non-binary may feel they are both male and female, neither male nor female, or have a gender identity that shifts over time. Non-binary identities are diverse and can include terms such as genderqueer, genderfluid, agender, and bigender, among others.

It is important to understand that non-binary is a valid gender identity, distinct from sexual orientation. Non-binary individuals may identify with any sexual orientation, just as cisgender individuals do. Pronoun usage is a common way to show respect for a non-binary person's identity. While some non-binary people may use he/him or she/her pronouns, many prefer gender-neutral pronouns such as they/them, or neopronouns. It is always best to ask someone what pronouns they use.
