Mitres

MITRE is a United States–based not-for-profit organization that operates several federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs) to assist the U.S. government and other public-interest clients. It conducts research and development across areas such as systems engineering, cybersecurity, healthcare, aviation, and national security, and provides technical expertise, analysis, and implementation support. The organization is governed by a board of trustees and is funded primarily through government contracts. Its primary offices are located at its headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, with additional centers in McLean, Virginia, and other locations.

MITRE is known for delivering frameworks, models, and databases that inform public-sector decision-making and policy. Notable outputs include the MITRE ATT&CK framework, which documents adversary tactics, techniques, and procedures; CAPEC, a catalog of attack patterns; CWE, a hierarchy of software weaknesses; and the CVE list, a widely used catalog of publicly known vulnerabilities maintained in collaboration with partners. These resources are used by government agencies, private sector organizations, and researchers to assess threats, improve defenses, and promote safer and more reliable systems.

The use of the plural form MITREs is uncommon in standard reference to the organization; outputs are typically referred to by their specific program names (for example, MITRE ATT&CK or MITRE CWE). MITRE emphasizes collaboration among government, industry, and academia to address challenges in cybersecurity, safety-critical systems, and public-interest technology, while maintaining a non-profit, mission-driven stance.
